Hired Guns: Frontier Shogi brings traditional Japanese shogi to a frontier table. Captured pieces return to play under their captor’s command.

Learn shogi the frontier way. First Ride introduces movement, captures, drops, promotion and protecting your King through five small interactive steps. Its Pocket Guide covers all eight piece types and key rules. It uses the same legal-move engine as the main game, stores lesson progress separately and returns you to your table without erasing your saved game.

Choose your company

Play a computer rival on your own device, or choose Pass & Play for two people sharing one screen. Three practice puzzles, piece-movement diagrams, legal-move highlights, hints, undo and portable saves remain available. The computer levels are relative practice settings, not ratings or a tournament-strength guarantee.

A simpler release

This Solo & Learn edition does not include online friend invitations, multiplayer rooms, accounts, matchmaking, rankings, chat or a match server. You do not need to connect a backend to use any lesson or local game.

The porch and the score

The approved frontier-town scenery and clean tabletop edge frame the board. The Porch Sessions includes seven original compositions, synthesized without outside recordings or soundfonts. Music is optional and loads from this website when enabled or previewed.

Rules and alpha limitations

This remains an early playable release, not a tournament service. Legal shogi movement, drops, promotion, check, checkmate and repetition are enforced. The documented amateur 27-point entering-king declaration is available; the in-game rules guide explains the convention. Concept artwork is not a diagram of a legal position.

Your progress stays local

Save game exports a JSON file that can be loaded into the local game later. The guide and practice puzzles do not overwrite your regular game. A beginner-game handoff opens a setup dialog; it starts a new game only after you confirm.
